Going Viral is Not the Point

Every content creator (or Creative, as I call them) dreams of their content going viral. The thought of millions of people consuming what you created feels almost as good as winning the lottery. But it shouldn’t.

To have millions of people read something I wrote isn’t all that thrilling. Sure, it’s a great opportunity. But what do I do with that? What does that exposure get me? It gets me an opportunity to touch people’s minds, and in so doing, influence their lives.

THAT is the goal. I could care less how MANY people engage my ideas. I care how DEEPLY people engage, because that leads to change. I’d trade one devoted reader for a billion who view my content and forget about me that same day, which is often the case with “viral” content.
